about
Oy’s single “One on the row” chants the ceasefire of systemic injustices,
“One on the Row”, opens up with warm ambient symphonies, yet much like a cloud of smoke, it dissipates almost instantly as the winds of injustices reveal the ravages of a rapid fire in broad daylight. “You’re sitting in fire”, Joy's firm vocals resonate in the tunnel of a disheartening reality: the 25th of May will mark the second death anniversary of George Floyd.
On the 24th of May, the Swiss band OY, pays tribute to black lives, reminding us that it is not a moment of the past but a movement towards emancipated futures.
The song, emboldened by collective consciousness, echoes the worldwide plight of black communities against state violence and systemic racism. While mourning the griefs of the past and the present, Oy casts glimpses of hope in a daring recital of loud and lively dub poetry bouncing off a bass trap. Just like that, the attention shifts towards what matters: back lives. Each line is imbued by the memory of those who once were, and those who still are.
A technicolor synth morphs into a dreamscape of hope and resilience casting the shadow of revolution on the abrasive flames of systemic oppression. A collective rising of voices, from the unheard to the most outspoken, march towards liberation, to the beat of drum cymbals. Each note, higher than the other, backed by layers of harmonious vocals, rises above, smothering the flames of an old entrenched system of violence. In a ceremonial dance of layered beats and textured synths, the song blazes up the fire of liberation and collective healing.
lyrics
You're sittin' in fire
You're sittin' in fire
You're sittin' in the fire
Sitting in the fire
You're sittin' in fire
You're sittin' in fire
You're sittin' in the fire
Sitting in the fire
They shoot him ‘a fine in the back
They shoot him ‘a triple in head
They shoot him ‘a fine when he sleep
Shoot him ‘a fine when he eat
They shoot him ‘a fine in the back
They shoot him ‘a triple in head
They shoot him ‘a fine when he sleep
Shoot him ‘a fine when he eat
You're sittin' in fire
You're sittin' in fire
You're sittin' in the fire
Sitting in the fire
You're sittin' in fire
You're sittin' in fire
You're sittin' in the fire
Sitting in the fire
Come drop by my bro bro
You combin' you fro fro
You one out of many
Dey say to be shady
You one on the row row row
They pull him right over the track
They push him the knee on the neck
They trigger as she be in bed
Now look you be under attack
They pull him right over the track
They push him the knee on the neck
They trigger as she be in bed
Now look you be under attack
Now cease the fire, cease the fire
Black lives matter, Black lives matter
Now cease the fire, cease the fire
Black lives matter, Black lives matter
Now cease the fire, cease the fire
Black lives matter, Black lives matter
